Birthdate: January 28, 1975
Dann grew up in the quaint Midwestern town
of Aberdeen, South Dakota.
In Aberdeen, Grandpa was the Mayor, dad was on the City Commission, and
each were partners in the family’s reputable construction company. Mom
stayed home carpooling, cooking, cleaning, and refereeing boxing matches for six boys.
Growing up with five male siblings
taught Dann a few things: Be big or be quick.
Get tough or get funny. Have humility . . . or have the snot beat of you. Dann chose the latter of each: quickness,
humor, and getting pounded-on regularly—which, was an effective way to learn humility.
Through high school, Dann was active in
several sports, primarily swimming, but fell in love with acting—thanks to the strength and amazing diversity of the
Aberdeen Community Theatre and the mentorship of an outstanding teacher, Deanna Mauck. As a result, the decision
to study English and Theater Education came naturally—and Dann continued athletics (Diving) and performing in university
productions at the University of South Dakota. As a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, he was also able to perform in, write,
and direct some of the fraternity’s competition musicals. (And take first
place three years in a row in the intramural belly-flop contest.)
He returned to Aberdeen
and took a job teaching theater and communications at his rival high school—falling in love with the energy and enthusiasm
that the students brought to every production . . . and most ordinary days. While
Dann was teaching, a beautiful woman from Lakeville, Minnesota
moved to town to work with students through volunteer programs. Rachel stole
Dann’s heart, and soon they were married—and moved to Lawrence, Kansas
for Rachel’s graduate school at KU.
Being near Kansas
City gave Dann the opportunity to begin working professionally in film, television, and in theater. He performed and directed for several Kansas City
companies before eventually starting his own theater company: Hurl Bert’s
Players. Hurl Bert’s Players gave Dann the opportunity to focus entirely
on productions, from writing and direction to lighting and sound design to marketing.
Dann was also appeared in a multitude of commercials and training videos, and as the lead in two independent films,
How to Succeed with Women with Malum Productions and Ham & Rye Production's SNAP, which are each working towards distribution.
After Rachel graduated from KU, the two
moved back towards family and the Minneapolis area, where Dann teaches high school
Film Studies and continues to work in film, television, and on stage. Dann and
Rachel have recently been blessed with the birth of their first child, Rowan Paul Hurlbert, a ten-pounder. Dann continues
to thank God for every day, every performance, and all of life’s blessings.
